Nisqually Earthquake

Nisqually Earthquake

The 6.8 quake occurred on February 28, 2001 at 10:54 am and has been recorded as one of the biggest in the states history. Although the quake only lasted 45 seconds tremors were reported as far away as Oregon. The quake caused some property damage, but no deaths and only minor injuries were reported.

Qwest Field Opens

Qwest Field Opens

Qwest Field opened on July 28, 2002 and has since earned the title of the loudest stadium in the NFL, causing the most False start penalties against opposing teams. The stadium has also housed various concerts, such as Rock artists, Metallica, The Rolling Stones and U2. Qwest Field is also the home of The Seattle Sounders FC, who played their first match in the stadium in March 2009. First lady Michelle Obama also made a visit to the stadiums adjacent events center.

McCaw Hall Renovated

McCaw Hall Renovated

Originally built for the 1962 Worlds Fair, the Marion Oliver McCaw Hall was completely torn up and rebuilt to catch up with modern acoustics and design techniques giving the Hall a fresh new look. The two major companies that the Hall houses are the Seattle Opera and the Pacific Northwest Ballet. The new design hosts a promenade, a water design and a public walkway into the Seattle Center Campus.

Initiative 901 Passed

Initiative 901 Passed

Initiative-901 or Washington's Smoking Ban, was passed in November of 2005. The ban requires smokers to be 25 feet from any doorway, window, or vent. The ban also barred smoking in places such as bars, bowling alleys, restaurants, and night clubs.

Capitol Hill Massacre

Capitol Hill Massacre

After a rave several partygoers had an after-party at a Capitol Hill home. The party went into the morning hours of March 25, 2006. 28-year-old Kyle Aaron Huff attended the party and after visiting the party guests for a while, none of whom he knew personally Huff went out to his truck and got two guns. When he entered the house again he opened fire killing five people and injuring two. Upon hearing the gunshots a nearby Seattle Police officer hurried over to the house and upon walking up the driveway saw Huff coming through the front door, before the officer could command him to lower the gun Huff put the gun in his mouth and killed himself. The service for the fallen victims was attended by over 500 people including many in the Seattle rave community.

Seattle Jewish Federation Shooting

July 28, 2006, around 4:00pm Naveed Afzal Haq walked into the Seattle Jewish Federation in Belltown, and started shooting random women, injuring six, one fatally. Seattle Police have classified the shooting as a hate crime and has been described as one of the most serious crimes to ever occur in the city.

World Cyber Games held in Seattle

The games ran from ran from October 3-7, 2007 and featured PC Games and X Box 360 games. Over 700 players from more than 70 different countries. This was the second time the games were held in an American location. Some of the games featured include popular titles like Need for Speed, Starcraft, and Tony Hawk Project 8.

Christine Gregoire defeats Rossi

Gregoire is the second female governor of Washington. Her opponent Dino Rossi also challenged her in the 2004 election, which Gregoire also won. Gregoire is a Democrat and is also the National Governors Association chairwoman for the 2010-2011 year.

NAAM Opens in Seattle

The Northwest African American Museum (NAAM) opened March 8th 2008. The museum was created to highlight the unique historical and cultural experiences of African Americans in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest.

Lakewood Officers Shooting

Lakewood Officers Shooting

November 29, 2009 Maurice Clemmons walked into a Lakewood coffee shop around 8:00 am and began shooting at the four full uniformed Lakewood Police Officers. No one else was injured in the shooting, but all four officers were killed. The victim was identified by police due to a long history of criminal activity in Washington and other states. After a several week manhunt around 3 am Clemmons was gunned down by Seattle Police and pronounced dead on the scene.
